MESSSGE FROM THE COMMODORE
It's time to get excited about another sailing, kayaking and water sports season. Maybe Spring is late this year, but don't give up hope, think of the Hot lazy days of Summer, and the enjoyment of being on the water. With the Quonset hut down, I contacted the town asking what their plans for that space are. Although the previous Official Parks Plan, 2013, still has 5 years to go, the plan is to create a new Official Parks Plan. I requested, and was granted, stakeholder status for LOSC. It is important that our interests be represented, especially as our lease is up for renewal December 2023. The current plan does not mention LOSC specifically, but states clearly that both the Lawn Bowling Green and the Seniors' Center, do not need water frontage and therefore could be relocated. This will result in a revised Official Parks to replace the existing. Based on some of the more recent decisions, I think their emphasis will be tilted toward commercial endeavors which naturally is a concern for our facility. Having given you some background, I am encouraging current members to get their applications in ASAP. If your are planning not to join this year, please reconsider. The degree of usage of our facilities will be important when negotiating our lease renewal later this year. It's also time to get out your salesperson-ship and encourage friends and neighbours to join the club. While we are sold out of kayak rack space, we are ready to build more racks and this goes for paddle boards too. You don't just get a convenient place to store your equipment but included is great social activity. On top of all that, as a member you get the use of all the club boats and sailing instruction as required. Not bad for the very low annual membership. We have plans to revamp the washrooms and so far have installed hand holds in all the stalls and plan to upgrade the toilets to higher stance and low water usage. Last year an extension to the walkway was built to facilitate easier access to the club for those who require it. We look forward to creating more opportunities for group on the water activities, from regular weekly group sailing to planned group kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing. Lets get out and support our local longstanding watersports activities club. A short note to remind returning members that it is time to send in your renewals. Deadline is the end of March after which there is a late penalty.
Please ensure that you indicate your locker number, rack location and whether you hold a boating licence. Only holders of a boating licence are allowed to operate the safety boat and in this regard we want to hold a short seminar in the Spring to discuss where the equipment is stored and demonstrate the safe retrieval process for persons on or in the water requiring assistance. At the AGM in December we discussed creating functioning committees linked to specific directors for the purpose of involving more members in the activities of the club. These committees would function throughout the year and be involved in the direction of associated activities.
Tentatively we considered the following. Regatta committee July 1 Cherry festival committee Kayak committee Social committee Building improvements committee Finance (we desperately require an individual who has bookkeeping skills to work with our current director in order to take on the finance position in 2024 and beyond. John will not be continuing in 2024 and if we are unable to attract a replacement, we will have to outsource) Please consider in which of these you would be interested in becoming involved. Not only would your participation be welcomed, it also counts toward your annual volunteer hours. Those interested in a particular area will meet with the director responsible and discuss how to move forward. This is an informal process but is designed to generate more ideas.
